Bissell Vacuum Cleaner Overheating – Why and How To Fix

The vacuum canister is too full
If the canister of your Bissell vacuum cleaner is too full, the machine will start overheating. To solve the problem, empty the canister then leave the vacuum cleaner to cool down for about thirty minutes. After leaving the vacuum cleaner to cool down, the machine should start working properly.
The filters are dirty
Note: When cleaning your Bissell vacuum filter, you might need to look for two filters because some Bissell vacuum cleaners might have a pre motor filter and a post motor filter.
If the filter of your Bissell vacuum cleaner is dirty, the machine will start overheating. To solve the problem, you will need to clean the filter. Follow the steps below to clean your Bissell vacuum cleaner filter . . .
Step 1. Turn your vacuum cleaner off and unplug it from the power outlet before you begin the cleaning process.
Step 2. Press the release button on top of the vacuum canister to disconnect it from the vacuum cleaner.
Step 3. Take the vacuum canister out of the vacuum cleaner and set it aside.
Step 4. Open the vacuum canister by lifting the filter tab and pulling the canister cover back.
Step 5. Take the foam pre filter from the top of the vacuum canister and set it aside.
Step 6. Wash the pre filter with warm water and a mild detergent. Leave the filter to dry.
Step 7. Make sure the filter is completely dry before putting it back into the vacuum cleaner. Putting a wet filter in your Bissell vacuum cleaner can cause it to malfunction.
Step 8. Put the pre filter back in the vacuum canister once it is completely dry.
Step 9 Reconnect the vacuum canister to the vacuum cleaner.
Step 10. Disconnect the post motor from the vacuum cleaner. You can find the post motor filter casing at the bottom of the vacuum canister.
Step 11.Pull the filter door out and set it aside.
Step 12. Pull out the post motor filter.
Step 13. The post motor filter can’t be cleaned with water. To clean the post motor filter, simply tap it on the side of a trash can or sink to get rid of loose dirt.
Step 14. Put the post motor filter back in its place under the vacuum cleaner canister.
Step 15. Put the post motor filter door back in its place.
Step 16. Leave the vacuum cleaner to cool down for about thirty minutes before you try using it again.
Step 17. Turn the vacuum cleaner back on after thirty minutes and check if it is working like it is supposed to now.
The vacuum cleaner attachments might be clogged
If the attachments of your Bissell vacuum cleaner are clogged, the machine can overheat and shut down. To solve the problem, you will need to unclog the vacuum attachments. Follow the steps below to unclog your Bissell vacuum cleaner attachments . . .
